Ultimate Goal Setting for Success
How to set clear goals and achieve them.
This post is about setting your own goals and how to achieve them. I know from personal experience that is not enough to have goals or just vague goals, like ' I want to be rich. Setting a goal and not taking action towards it does not mean you will achieve that goal. So stay with me on this journey and learn together how to better achieve our goals.
Before we dive in I recommend setting goals that are giving you purpose, life meaning or fulfilment. Whatever this might be for you is no right or wrong.
Maybe some people aspire to become billionaires, other people don't want anything to do with money and want a self-sufficient life. Whatever these goals might be make sure they provide you happiness, purpose and fulfilment.
Is it enough to have one goal?
It can be, however, do not neglect other areas of your life. I will give you an example of my own.
When I was 21 I desperately wanted to have money so I won't need to work part-time while I was a student.
So I created an estate agency to rent rooms for students and professionals alike. The business was going well but I start neglecting my health(stop going to the gym and eating fast food) spending less time with my girlfriend(now my wife) and also the most important was neglecting the university. Having more time for the university was the goal, everything happen exactly the other way around without me realising at the time.
What I recommend is to have one specific goal that you will be working more on, like give it 50% of your daily focus, however, do not neglect other areas of life.
The big 7.
Your goals should be in a round sphere as all your life aspects complement each other. There are 7 major areas for me when it comes to setting goals, this might be yours too.
- Self control-How do you actually control your emotions and thought during the day
- Your health- All of us want to be healthy and wants to have the energy to pursue our goals, have proper body weight and good night's sleep.
- Relationships- This can include your family, friends and spouse
- Learning- This is a good thing you have read so far, that proves you want to learn new things. The biggest mistake people make is that they stop learning when school finishes, we all should have lifelong learning goals.
- Being a creator- Doesn't mean becoming Picasso, just creating things that are better for your life and others. For me is this blog.
- Goals of leisure and hobbies- Very important, we all have to relax sometimes, so pick an activity that really makes you happy and give importance to it.
- Wealth- Build wealth, some of us believe being rich can mean being evil. However, if you desire to help others, you won't be able to if you are not wealthy. Keep that in mind.
Start your journey today.
By the end of this article, you will probably write your first big goal in life.
Let's start with a small goal for today, for example, your goal could be to work out for 15 minutes or to take a long walk, or just finish this article for this goal.
My goal for today will be to finish writing this article and I created the perfect environment for it.
I write this article at 5 in the morning, when all my household is asleep, turned my phone down, made 2 coffees. Always try to create the perfect environment that will help you succeed in your goal whatever it might be.
Let's get a little interactive and write in the comments the first goal for today. Give it a try, we will hold you accountable for it so you will be more likely to succeed.
Goals are meaningless without actions.
Setting goals is quite easy, the hard part is the achievement of it.
Retire by the age of 40, and continue to do what you do on daily basis. If you don't take action towards your goals and create small habits that compounded over time will help you achieve that goal, then they will never happen.
Having a vision board with your dream car, dream house and all other big dreams you have won't be enough without you taking action towards the dreams.
Take this example, I want a new sports car. Now ask yourself what can I do every single day to help me achieve this dream. If money is the issue then try to find ways to make more money. Never say I can't afford it, just ask yourself ' How can I afford it?'.
Avoid these mistakes when setting goals.
The first biggest mistake is to don't have goals at all in life and to let other people dictate your life goals. For example, your parents might set goals for you, 'You have to be a doctor' your teacher might have set goals for you. The major corporation has all goals for you, buy this, watch this advertise, subscribe here. Daily we are bombarded with other people's goals for us.
The solution is to give yourself time to reflect on your life. Pick a time to reflect on your goals, don't neglect yourself.
Do this on your way to work, when you get out with your dog or just for a walk by yourself.
My second mistake will be to have generic goals like I will lose 15 kg by the summer. Then you meet them with the same weight and maybe more explaining to you the new diet they are on. These generic goals won't cut it. You need to have specific daily habits that will help you achieve that.
Tip: Write your goals down and read them every single day. This will keep you on track, it takes only about 10-20 seconds a day. this will raise the question mark: Is what I do align with my goals?
